We woke up this morning to a chill mist over the lavender fields and pumpkin patch. It proved an appropriately eerie setting as we prepared to welcome many more gourd-eager guests to the farm from today up until this Sunday (29th October).
As the lavender rows go dormant for the winter months and the remnants of our sunflower patch succumb to the colder weather, the farm is certainly making for a spooky scene. The bright pinks and purples of the summer months have been superseded by autumnal oranges and browns.

Although we can’t deny that summer is our favourite season – when else could we get that hit of gorgeous lavender aroma? – the different faces that nature shows at this time of year bring their own kind of satisfaction. Those bright bracing mornings and early evenings have an appeal of their own, especially when combined with the delicious autumnal delicacies popping up in cafes and shops everywhere.
As for Cadwell Farm, the greying lavender and spent sunflowers continue to contribute to our natural environments; birds love picking the seeds out of the sunflower heads, and the lavender provides an excellent natural habitat for these and other animals, such as hares, over the cooler seasons. We can’t wait to see these flowers light up our hillside again in 2024. For now, these ghostly memories of summer blooms are well suited to the time of year, and still look beautiful when the sun decides to come out…
