Weekly Pickings: 28 August 2024

The last of Weekly Pickings for 2024.

Welcome to the last of our Weekly Pickings series for 2024!

We hope this has provided a useful weekly update throughout the summer – thanks so much for following along!

We’re now right at the end of our flowering season. The lavender has almost completely faded, and there are only a very few sunflowers left. For this reason, we’ve stopped selling tickets online and are charging a reduced walk-in entrance fee of £2.50 until Friday 30th August. This allows you to pick as many of the remaining sunflowers as you wish. After this Friday, the field will be closed for the winter.

Although the flowering season is over now, the Old Barn tearoom, farm shop, play area, and museum will remain open in September with some new opening hours:

As we head into Autumn, we’ll be serving our usual selection of delicious homemade cakes, drinks, and savoury lunches, so please do come by!

How are the sunflowers looking?

The second of our two sunflower patches is now at the end of its flowering period. There aren’t many left to see now, so we’re including as many sunflowers as you can hold in the entrance fee! That deal will only last up until this Friday 30th August, so do come by then if you want to see the last of the sunflowers.

How is the lavender looking?

We have now harvested most of the lavender. As you can see from the photos below (taken last week), the field is looking much more grey than purple. Until this Friday 30th August, we are still allowing lavender picking for anyone who wishes to pick the lavender heads for scent.

Thanks for following the Hitchin Lavender blog! More updates will follow during the autumn and winter, although these may be less frequent.
