Weekly Pickings: 23rd August

Have a look at the latest weekly update with photos showing how everything is looking!

We have now harvested about half of the main lavender field!

It’s the end of the season at the farm but the tearoom, gift shop and museum are still open to enjoy! We’re heading into a lovely warm bank holiday weekend and we’d love to welcome you for a visit!

Without further ado, let’s get into the update…

How is the lavender looking?

We are now past the end of the lavender flowering season, which means that the purple petals on the lavender heads will continue to fade away now. You can see this clearly in the main field (pictured above), where the Grosso has been picked considerably by our visitors and harvested too.

There is still lavender to pick and it remains high quality in terms of its fragrance and the oil within the heads. For those of you who do still want to visit and pick the lavender, we recommend heading over to the right hand side of the field, where our late-flowering varieties still hold some colour.

We will be continuing to harvest over the coming weeks, so we would recommend coming this bank holiday weekend if you would still like to pick the lavender!

Even though the majority of the lavender has turned grey now, there are still some purple patches to be seen here and there, such as this small area at the back of the display field, which was looking lovely in the sun on Thursday morning! ↓

How are the sunflowers looking?

Sunflower Patch - 22-08-19

There are still no sunflowers to be seen in the main field.

Here and there, some sunflowers can be seen gaining height, but there are nowhere near the numbers we would be expecting. We have to say that we don’t think there will be many sunflowers at all this year but do check in next week for a clearer update.

Faded long ago, but still useful for dramatic pictures!

This week’s news and views…

We are happy to announce some updated opening hours, starting on Monday 2nd September!

For the beginning of the off-season, we will be closed on the first two days of the week. The tearoom, museum and gift shop will remain open the rest of the week, so you can still come and enjoy those features of the Hitchin Lavender experience!

We will also be resuming bookings for afternoon tea from 4th September onwards, so get in touch if you are interested!
